The following are common uses or applications for isolators in microwaves.
➤ In RF circuit design
➤ In test and measurement
➤ In the microwave RF path, as a component to prevent any unwanted reflections.
Microwave isolators in RF circuit design
The use of isolators in microwave circuit design is described. This circuit is part of the RF transceiver. As shown in the figure above, the isolator is connected to the output of the RF mixer or the output of the MMIC amplifier to prevent unwanted signal reflections from damaging the preceding device.
Microwave isolators protect test and measurement equipment
Isolators are used in test and measurement to protect test equipment from damage caused by undesirable reflections from the DUT (device under test). The figure shows testing the DUT using a signal source with the help of an isolator. Here, the signal source is connected to port 1 and the DUT is connected to port 2.
As mentioned earlier, microwave isolators are used at the output of the RF amplifier to prevent damage due to unwanted reflections. This saves costs because it extends the life of test equipment and components used in circuit design.
